It seems no matter what we are doing, driving, running a race or thinking about the competition, we are always looking over our shoulder to see who or what is coming up on us. We fear being passed, left in the dust, being a loser.
I HATE losing. I try to be gracious, but it’s a crock. To me it is pretty much black and white – either you are a winner or you are a loser. I don’t think everyone should get a ribbon. That being said, I also hate looking over my shoulder to gauge who is possibly gaining on me. I read a posting by Seth Godin that really rang true. Keep your eyes focused forward on YOUR path, quit looking over your shoulder and worry what everyone else is doing – run your own race, not theirs.
It is crucial to know (pretty much) what is happening in your space, but it is more important to know where you are going and why and focus all your energy (and your team) on that goal. The likelihood of wrecking is much higher if you are always looking back.
Besides, the objects in the rearview mirror appear closer than they really are.
